I developed asthma after a strange respiratory illness in medical school.
To this day, nobody knows exactly what caused it because I never went to the doctor. (I come from a family that doesn’t go to the doctor unless you’re practically knocking on death’s door.)
Years later, I still live with the aftermath.
I call it The Long Whatever.
You’ll understand why by the end of this episode. Maybe you have your own Long Whatever, I don’t know.
It’s much better than it used to be thanks to a treatment plan that combines conventional medicine with what some people would generously describe as “selective quackery.” But there’s one time each month when I still have to be careful. When I get my period, my lungs like to remind me they’re still in charge.
In this first episode of Eeks Speakeasy, an asthma attack in a pet store turns into something much bigger than an asthma story. Somewhere along the way, there’s a bathroom code, a man afraid to help, an anxious dog who is definitely not a medical alert dog, a few thoughts about panic versus physiology, and honest (or funny?) thoughts about life in general.
If you’ve ever had your body unexpectedly hijack your plans, this one’s for you.
Listen below.
