How Rasputin Really Died & Other Bizarre Deaths

March 27, 2026 by Dr. Eeks

Listen on Causes or Cures:

I’ve always had a soft spot for Rasputin.

Charismatic. Mysterious. My first dog Curly had hemophilia and let’s face it, the dude was a lady’s man.

So when I got to talk with Dr. Roger Byard, a forensic pathologist who actually analyzed the facts around Rasputin’s death, I was fully locked in.

Turns out, the man didn’t really have a problem not dying. Which slightly burst my bubble.

Also yes, I once dressed as Rasputin for Halloween. This was the entire costume: beard, black coat, and intense staring. No one had any idea who I was, perhaps just a crazy person. At least Barnaby looked cute.

Anysputin,,,,

On a recent episode of Causes or Cures, I’m joined by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Byard, an internationally recognized expert who has spent decades investigating deaths that are rare, misunderstood, and often deeply unsettling. Of course, we talk about how Rasputin really died, because Dr. Byard took the time to look into it and publish a paper about it.

We also talk about:

*Fatal animal encounters involving kangaroos, roosters, cattle, and donkeys

*Whether pets truly consume their deceased owners, and what the evidence shows

*Cannibalism, including its different forms and the true cases that shaped how we understand it

*Historical fears of being buried alive and the strange methods once used to confirm death

*The one case that has stayed with Dr. Byard long after the autopsy was finished

Dr. Byard is a repeat guest on Causes or Cures. The topic of his first episode was the forensic elements of killer selfies. That one still gets a ton of downloads and people are still killing themselves with cell phones. Hmmm.

By the way, when Dr. Byard and I were emailing back and forth about a potential topic, I could not choose. That’s why this episode turned into a buffet of bizarre deaths. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
