Another day, another bear selfie death. Killer selfies strike again!

An Italian motorcyclist, Omar Farang Zin (48), was travelling Romania’s scenic Transfăgărășan road when he stopped to photograph and try to feed wild brown bears. After posting close‑range selfies and videos, he returned the next day, approached a female bear with four cubs, and was dragged into a ravine and fatally mauled. Witnesses alerted rescue teams, but he died at the scene; authorities later shot the bear involved. The case has become another cautionary tale about tourists ignoring wildlife‑safety rules for social‑media photos.
It’s sad when anyone dies, even if he or she was an idiot. Personally, I feel really bad for the mama bear. She was just doing what any good mama would do-protecting her babies from a perceived threat. It’s sad she had to lose her life and leave four cubs orphans because of human stupidity. Word to the wise: If you see a bear in the wild, particularly a mama bear with cubs, leave them alone! I grew up hiking in the woods, so maybe I know better, but I thought staying away from bears with babies was Life 101. Who knew?
This latest bear selfie death joins the growing roll call of killer selfies, photos that literally cost the photographer their life. Early in my Causes or Cures podcast, forensic pathologist Dr Roger Byard unpacked this phenomenon, and that episode is still one of my most played; listens are spiking again, proof that curiosity about these tragedies keeps rising.
Dr Byard explains who is most at risk, where killer selfies are most common, and shares jaw dropping cases from around the world. Some victims might earn a Darwin Award, sure. But before we scoff, remember how easily a buzzing phone steals anyone’s focus. I see New Yorkers collide with strangers, trash bags, and telephone poles every day. Selfie deaths are the extreme tip of that same distraction iceberg: most people walk away embarrassed, a few never get up.
Anyhow, you can listen to the episode here. I promise it’s fascinating, and bonus points: Dr. Byard has such a great podcast voice.
