Dr. Chinwe Williams joined the Causes or Cures Podcast to talk about the teen mental health crisis.
Rising rates of depression, anxiety and everything in between are hitting teens and kids…the question is why? Is there one reason? Multiple reasons? What can parents do to help a struggling teen? It almost seems like a trend that goes against intuition, in the sense that societal shifts, policy changes and industrial, technological and health advancements have, on the surface, made life easier for all of us. Kids and teens today have so many resources and opportunities compared to kids and teens of past generations. Despite this, there is a teen mental health crisis. What in the world is going on?
In the podcast, Dr. Chinwe Williams discusses the root cause of this crisis. She explains how social media, now a dominant part of any kid’s life, impacts teen mental health, the “lying” spiral of anxiety, and offers practical tips for parents and guardians to try at home. She also comments on the link between faith and teen mental health, an interesting connection to consider in a mainstream society that continually sidelines faith as unnecessary, archaic or ignorant. (And for the record, I have faith.)
